Tucked away in the bustling Hauz Qazi precinct of Old Delhi, just steps from the Chawri Bazar metro station, Bagh e Nabiullah Mosque was built around 400 years ago by Maulvi Qazi Nabiullah within his private garden—hence the name “Bagh.” Originally meant for his personal devotion, the mosque later opened its doors to the public and continues to host five daily prayers under the care of his descendant, Imam Abul Misbah . The modest entrance—a narrow doorway between two shops—opens into a serene marble-paved courtyard, complete with a central ablution pool (now dry) and a vibrant bougainvillaea that stands out against the calm . The prayer hall lies in near darkness, its ambiance cave-like and introspective, enhanced by intricately carved wooden jaalis that softly filter the sparse daylight . Stepping inside feels like passing through a hidden portal: from the noisy chaos of streets into an almost spiritual hush, a transition so sudden it’s been described as “pleasantly unsettling.” Witnessing simple acts—like a man sharing a meal in a side chamber—adds to the mosque’s enduring aura of living history .
