The Masjid Irvin Road bears a name that harks back to Delhi’s colonial past. Its signage still reads “Masjid Irvin Road”, referencing a street once named after a British official. However, following India’s independence, the city began shedding such colonial-era names. In 2017, the road was officially renamed Baba Kharak Singh Marg, in honor of the prominent Sikh freedom fighter. Yet, the mosque continues to retain its original name—standing as a quiet but persistent reminder of the city’s layered and evolving history. Architecturally, the mosque is a modest structure inspired by Mughal design. It features a domed prayer hall, slender minarets, and red sandstone accents reminiscent of the classic Shahjahanabad aesthetic. While not grand in scale, its simplicity lends it a unique spiritual charm. Unlike the grand congregational mosques of Delhi, Masjid Irvin Road is compact and serene, offering a tranquil refuge for daily worshippers. It serves primarily as a local spiritual retreat rather than a major tourist attraction. Despite its humble appearance, the mosque occasionally features in “Delhi Darshan” heritage tours, thanks to its peaceful ambiance, historical context, and well-maintained interiors. Nestled in the heart of Delhi near Connaught Place, it remains an understated yet significant piece of the city’s living heritage.
