Qutub Sahib Masjid

Approach: Approximately 350 meters south-west of Mehrauli Bus Stand and around 1.7 kilometers north-northwest of Qutub Minar Metro Station. Airport: Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport Railway Station: Nizamuddin Railway Station Bus Station: Mehrauli Bus Stand

The mosque is believed to have been originally constructed out of mud by Qutub Sahib himself. It holds significant religious importance, with regular prayers and other major religious ceremonies still conducted there. Architecturally, it follows the Khilji style and stands as a large and memorable structure, measuring approximately 25 meters across. The mosque is two bays deep and divided into three compartments, with the central compartment’s second bay accessible through three arched openings. Over time, the mosque has undergone various extensions and renovations, including the addition of a concrete ceiling and wooden-framed doorways in all openings. The western wall features three mihrab recesses, and the ceiling is decorated with plaster of Paris. The façade has been enhanced in a pietra dura fashion using marble and plaster work. A beautifully carved marble pulpit is also present. Above the central arch, a marble tablet bears an inscription that praises Emperor Farrukhsiyar for constructing the mosque with noble intentions and strong faith, as a place of worship for both the old and young. The original structure was made of rubble masonry with a plaster finish, while recent alterations have used stone, cement, and concrete.
