The Tomb of Ghiyas ud din Balban is a significant historical monument located in the Mehrauli Archaeological Park, Delhi. Balban was a powerful ruler of the Slave Dynasty who reigned from 1266 to 1287 CE during the Delhi Sultanate period. Known for his strict rule and strong central authority, Balban played a key role in consolidating the empire after the decline of earlier rulers. His tomb, though in ruins today, marks an important chapter in Indo-Islamic architecture and the history of medieval India. Historically, this tomb is important as it is believed to be the first monument in India to incorporate the true arch and the true dome using Islamic architectural techniques, rather than the corbelled arches used earlier. While the dome that once crowned the tomb has collapsed, its structure reflects a transition from early Sultanate architecture to more refined Mughal styles that came later. The use of the true arch in Balban’s tomb was a revolutionary development in Indian architecture, showing the growing influence of Persian and Arabic construction methods. Architecturally, the tomb is made of rubble masonry and is located in a relatively simple rectangular enclosure. Though much of its ornamentation has not survived, the structure’s pointed arches, stone brackets, and gateway reflect early Indo-Islamic design principles. Near the tomb lies the grave of Khan Shahid, believed to be Balban’s son, who died fighting the Mongols. Despite its ruined condition, the Tomb of Balban remains a remarkable and lesser-known monument that illustrates the architectural innovations of the 13th century and the legacy of a powerful Sultan.
