Asad Khan Tomb

The Tomb of Asad Khan in Sarai Rohilla, Delhi, is a lesser-known yet historically significant Mughal-era monument. It belongs to Asad Khan, a powerful nobleman who served as the Prime Minister (Wazir) under Emperor Aurangzeb and later under Bahadur Shah I. He was also the father of Zulfiqar Khan, another prominent figure in the Mughal court. Built in the early 18th century, likely around or shortly after Asad Khan’s death in 1716, the tomb is situated in what was once a bustling transit area for travelers and caravans. Architecturally, the structure reflects typical Mughal design elements such as arched doorways, a central dome, and symmetrical layout, though it is more modest compared to grand mausoleums like Humayun’s Tomb. Constructed using red sandstone and marble, the tomb lacks the elaborate inlay work found in more prominent monuments. Today, the Sarai Rohilla area is heavily urbanized, and the tomb has deteriorated over time due to neglect and encroachment. Despite its current condition, the tomb of Asad Khan remains a valuable piece of Delhi’s historical landscape, offering insight into the lives and legacy of the Mughal nobility during the empire’s later years.
