Khirki Mosque: The Mosque of Windows in South Delhi Khirki Mosque, also known as "The Mosque of Windows," is located near Khirki Village in South Delhi, close to the historic Satpula (Seven-Arched Bridge) along the southern wall of Jahanpanah—the fourth medieval city of Delhi. Built between 1351 and 1354 by Khan-i-Jahan Junan Shah, the Prime Minister of Feroz Shah Tughlaq (reign: 1351–1388), it is a striking example of Tughlaq-era architecture. The mosque's name, Khirki, means "window" in Urdu, derived from its distinctive jali (latticed stone window) design that appears across its upper walls. This square mosque, measuring 52 by 52 meters, is elevated on a 3-meter-high plinth and features four open courtyards providing natural light and ventilation to its interior prayer halls. The structure includes 180 columns, 60 pilasters, and 81 domes, arranged in a geometrical grid, with towers at all four corners and gateways flanked by turrets. The interior is simple yet elegant, adorned with stone screens, while the outer structure uses rubble masonry with plastered surfaces. Although the exact date of construction lacks direct inscriptional evidence, scholars such as Welch and Howard have dated it through architectural comparisons. Over time, the mosque suffered damage, including collapsing domes and deteriorating walls. Restoration efforts by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), particularly ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, were criticized for their inaccurate use of materials, resulting in parts of the mosque turning pink. INTACH classified it as a Grade A monument for its heritage value, and conservation methods were revised to include proper lime-surkhi techniques. The mosque lies near Saket, opposite the Select Citywalk Mall, and can be accessed via narrow lanes from Press Enclave Marg. The nearest metro station is Malviya Nagar.
