Ajmeri Gate, built in 1644, is located to the south-west of Shahjahanabad and was constructed with a square plan featuring high arched openings. It became one of the battlefields during the Sepoy Mutiny (the First War of Indian Independence) in 1857. The gate gets its name because the road passing through it leads to Ajmer in Rajasthan. Today, the gate is surrounded by a beautiful park. Nearby, there is a madrasa (Islamic school) built in 1811 by Nawab Ghaziuddin Bahadur, the father of the first Nizam of Hyderabad. West of the college are the tomb of the founder and a mosque. Over time, this madrasa was converted into Delhi College, which later became one of the constituent colleges of Delhi University. Although the college has now moved to a new building, the Anglo Arabic Senior Secondary School operates in the old building. Outside, near a ditch, were once located the remains of the underground apartments of Safdarjung, which were considered one of Delhi's notable attractions. Today, the old fort walls have been demolished and replaced by commercial and residential buildings, but the Ajmeri Gate still stands on the western side.
