Kalan Masjid, also known as the Kalan Mosque, is a historic 14th-century mosque located in Delhi, India. It is part of a group of seven mosques built by Khan-i-Jahan Tilangani, a prominent figure in the Delhi Sultanate during the reign of Sultan Muhammad bin Tughlaq. Kalan Masjid, also known as Kalan Mosque or Kali Masjid, is a historic 14th-century mosque located in Mohalla Qabristan near Turkman Gate, Delhi, India. Built in 1387 by Khan-i-Jahan Maqbul Tilangani during the reign of Firuz Shah Tughlaq, it is one of the seven mosques constructed by this prominent noble. The name "Kalan" means chief mosque, while "Kali" or black mosque may be a corrupted version of the original name. The mosque is a striking sandstone structure with dimensions of 140 feet in length and 120 feet in breadth, standing at a height of 66 feet with two stories. A flight of steps leads to the doorway on the first story, crowned by a low dome and flanked by two conical columns, with an inscription in Naskh script over the doorway marking its date of completion and patronage. The mosque features a square plan divided into four quadrants, embodying the architectural style of the era. Legend ties its history to a Sufi saint, Shah Turkman Bayabani, whose khanqah and tomb lay near the Yamuna River close to the modern Turkman Gate. It is said that Firuz Shah extended the city boundaries of Firozabad to include the saint's dargah for his blessings, incorporating nearby villages such as Bulbulikhana, which also housed Sultan Raziya?s tomb. Today, Kalan Masjid stands as a testament to Delhi's rich medieval heritage, nestled in the bustling heart of the old city.
