The Feroz Shah Kotla, also known simply as Kotla, was a fortress built by Sultan Feroz Shah Tughlaq to serve as the heart of his new city, Ferozabad, a version of Delhi he established. The fort complex includes the famous Ashokan Pillar, the Jami Masjid (mosque), a Baoli (stepwell), and a large garden area. The Jami Masjid, built by Feroz Shah Tughlaq in 1354, is one of the few remaining structures within the Citadel. It was the largest among the seven mosques constructed in Delhi during his rule. The main entrance to the mosque is located on the northern side, due to the proximity of the river to its eastern wall. The mosque is built on a foundation of several underground cells. The side cloisters and the main prayer hall have mostly disappeared, leaving only the rear wall standing on the western side. According to contemporary historians, there was once a sunken octagonal structure at the center of the mosque's courtyard, which held inscriptions recording the reign of Feroz Shah, especially the public works carried out under his rule. It is also believed that in this mosque or in an adjoining building, Emperor Alamgir II was executed in 1781. In 1398, Sultan Timur visited the mosque to offer prayers. He was so impressed by its architectural design that he took some of the masons and artisans with him to Samarkand, where he built a mosque inspired by this one.
