Nestled beside the Kishanganj–Thakurganj Road in Baksa village, Chhattargachh Jama Masjid stands as a spiritual anchor for the surrounding rural communities. With its elegant yet simple design, this masjid welcomes worshippers from Chhattargachh, Baksa, and neighboring hamlets for daily salah, Jum’ah congregations, and festive gatherings. Built likely in the 1990s through community initiative, it features a spacious prayer hall, arched entryways, and a tranquil courtyard that reflects the area's pastoral charm. More than a place of prayer, it is a center of togetherness and continuity—where fields meet faith, and the call to prayer echoes softly through open skies.
Set along the Kishanganj–Tayyabpur–Thakurganj–Galgaliya Road, amidst the greenery and quiet rhythms of Baksa village, stands Chhattargachh Jama Masjid—a peaceful and prominent masjid serving the faithful in one of Bihar’s northeastern rural belts. Known for its welcoming spirit and scenic surroundings, the masjid has quietly anchored the religious life of Chhattargachh and its neighboring villages for decades. Believed to have been constructed in the 1990s, the masjid arose from the collective aspirations of the local Muslim community. Families from Chhattargachh and surrounding areas contributed what they could—be it land, bricks, or voluntary labor. The aim was clear: to build a place of prayer that was accessible, dignified, and central to the growing village. The mosque’s architecture is traditional yet practical. A wide arched entrance welcomes worshippers, leading into a clean and airy prayer hall that can comfortably accommodate up to 150 individuals. Whitewashed walls reflect sunlight during the day, and at night, soft tube lighting keeps the interior well lit. A singular dome rests modestly atop the building, while a short minaret at one corner marks its identity and amplifies the Adhan with calm resonance. The mihrab inside is built with polished tiles, facing westward toward Makkah, and a wooden minbar stands beside it—used each Friday during the khutbah. The floor is layered with prayer mats that are refreshed periodically by donations, and ceiling fans help cool the air in warmer months. A dedicated wudhu (ablution) space lies to the side, with hand pumps and taps offering clean water. A courtyard outside is shaded by a few old trees—often serving as a spillover space during Eid prayers or large Friday gatherings. Children are often seen reciting Qur’an in the evenings, seated on mats beneath the open sky or under the shade of the veranda. During Ramadan, the mosque comes alive after sunset: villagers gather for iftar in simple unity—sharing dates, rice, and heartfelt duas. Taraweeh prayers are offered with devotion, and the calmness of the rural night amplifies the spiritual atmosphere. On Eid, the mosque overflows with energy, as worshippers arrive early in festive attire, and the adjoining grounds become a place of greeting and celebration. The masjid’s day-to-day upkeep is managed by a small local committee. Donations are used for cleaning, electricity, and occasional repairs. A recent effort added a loudspeaker and updated the prayer timetable display board at the entrance. Though not digitally marked on travel platforms, Chhattargachh Jama Masjid holds an irreplaceable place in the hearts of the people it serves. It is where children first learn to bow in prayer, elders gather for reflection, and the wider village community finds shared solace in faith.
