At the heart of Line Para in Subhaspally, one of the oldest and most socially active neighborhoods in Kishanganj, stands Anjuman Islamia—a name that resonates not just as a mosque, but as an institution deeply woven into the city’s religious, cultural, and educational fabric. Established in the mid-20th century, Anjuman Islamia is among the earliest organized Muslim bodies in the district. The term Anjuman itself refers to a collective or assembly, and this space has historically served as both a masjid and a community hall where important religious events, public welfare discussions, and interfaith dialogues take place. The building itself is expansive, with a multi-use structure that includes a prayer hall, community office, and event space. Its architecture is stately but simple—arched entryways, a central dome, and a courtyard shaded by trees. Inside the prayer hall, up to 200 worshippers can gather for Salah. The mihrab is elegantly tiled, and a wooden minbar is used for weekly khutbahs and sermons. The interior is well-lit, with tall windows and a ventilated ceiling supported by fans and LED lighting. An adjacent wudhu area is spacious, clean, and tiled, equipped with taps, hand pumps, and a separate section for women during large gatherings. Volunteers and caretakers ensure its upkeep, especially before Friday prayers, Ramadan taraweeh, and Muharram majlis. Where Anjuman Islamia truly distinguishes itself is in its social and religious engagement. During Muharram, the masjid becomes a hub of activity—hosting majlis, organizing noha-khwani, and coordinating processions that attract participants from across Kishanganj. The masjid plays a prominent role in Ashura processions, often ending at Karbala grounds. In Ramadan, the mosque arranges community iftars, supports zakat distribution, and invites speakers from outside districts for spiritually enriching lectures. Eid gatherings at Anjuman Islamia are well-attended, and the masjid often collaborates with local markets to ensure a smooth flow of people and resources. Beyond ritual worship, Anjuman Islamia serves as a platform for educational initiatives. The building occasionally hosts Qur’an competitions, Islamic quiz contests, and awareness drives on social issues. It also serves as a liaison point between religious scholars and civil society.
