Ponda Fort, also known as Farmagudi or Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Fort, is a hilltop stronghold built originally in 1546 by the Muslim forces of the Adil Shahi Sultanate of Bijapur to defend against Portuguese territorial expansion . Constructed using laterite and mud, it commanded a strategic view over the Ponda valley from its elevation of around 40 m . In 1675, Maratha ruler Shivaji successfully besieged the fort during his "Siege of Ponda," capturing it from the Bijapuri governor Muhammad Khan and consolidating Maratha control in Konkan . Later, in October 1683, the Portuguese viceroy attacked the fortress but failed to retake it, though the assault caused considerable damage . Subsequently, in 1783, the fort came under Portuguese administration as part of their Novas Conquistas . After India's liberation of Goa, the site fell into decay but was renovated by the Indian government in 1977, with a statue of Shivaji added to the compound . Despite ongoing restoration commitments and plans—including significant funding and master plans announced in recent years—the fort still shows signs of wear, with portions of the walls in need of repair . Today, the rebuilt structure serves as a public park and vantage point, offering panoramic views and a tangible glimpse into Goa’s layered history.
