Amid the busy lanes of Jaiprakash Nagar, in Muzaffarpur's 842003 area, lies a quiet but deeply significant institution—Muslim Yateem Khana, a sanctuary for orphaned and destitute Muslim children. For decades, this orphanage has extended compassion and care to those who have lost their families or come from difficult socioeconomic backgrounds, nurturing them with structure, education, and faith. Established in the late 20th century, the Yateem Khana was born from a pressing local need: to ensure that orphaned Muslim children had a safe space where they could grow without neglect or exclusion. A group of community elders, with donations from local businessmen and families, helped lay the foundation of this home, driven by the Islamic principle of khidmat-e-khalq (service to humanity). The institution is modest in structure—a two-storied building with dormitory-style rooms, a small prayer area, a dining hall, and a basic classroom section. The building, though not luxurious, is kept clean and functional. Children are housed according to age groups, and meals are prepared on-site, following a regular dietary schedule. Each day at Muslim Yateem Khana begins with Fajr salah, followed by Qur’an recitation and basic Islamic studies, supervised by resident teachers. The children are also enrolled in government or local private schools for their formal education. In the evenings, they receive tuitions and moral instruction, with an emphasis on discipline, respect for elders, cleanliness, and truthfulness. The imam or religious supervisor ensures that children grow up with a sound understanding of Islamic values, attending Friday prayers, observing Ramadan, and participating in community Eid celebrations. Taraweeh, iftar gatherings, and Eid gifting are made special through community engagement—local families often sponsor meals or donate clothes during these sacred periods. The institution also hosts community awareness programs, interfaith visits, and volunteer-based health checkups in collaboration with nearby clinics. Its role extends beyond childcare; it is also a community trust—a place where locals donate sadaqah, zakat, or resources in memory of loved ones or as part of annual charity. Run by a trust board, the Yateem Khana maintains transparency in its accounts and accepts material and financial contributions for food, books, uniforms, and building maintenance. Plans are underway to develop a small computer learning section and expand the library to help children become more digitally literate and self-reliant in the years ahead.
