The Zuma Mosque at Balubazar stands out for its stunning beauty and architectural magnificence. It dates back to the period of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The construction of this splendid mosque began under the patronage of Shahzada Begum Zebunisa, daughter of Aurangzeb, and was completed by Nawab Nazim Ekram Khan in 1102 A.H. (1689 A.D.). This historical monument is one of the most attractive and grand structures in Cuttack. Uniquely, the mosque is built below the surface level, giving it a distinctive appearance. From the outside, it appears as a small, single-story building, but an underground passage runs from the front to the back, enhancing its architectural intrigue. Visitors entering from the main road are greeted by a vast courtyard measuring 150 × 75 feet, creating a visually captivating space. At the center of the courtyard is a ‘hauz’ (water tank) used for ablution before prayers. The mosque was designed to accommodate large gatherings of devotees, emphasizing values of spiritual unity, integration, and brotherhood. Architecturally, the mosque draws inspiration from Turkish design, featuring four tall minarets at each corner and a central dome (cupola). In addition to the central dome, three more domes enhance the visual appeal of the structure. Internal staircases on either side connect different levels of the mosque, offering views of the scenic townscape of Cuttack. One of the most striking features of the Zuma Mosque is its exquisite inscriptions and calligraphy, which not only enhance its beauty but also captivate all who visit. The mosque leaves a lasting impression on visitors with its exceptional design and spiritual atmosphere.
