Sayed Abdullah Shah Bukhari Baba of Khurda was a revered 17th-century saint who came from Samarkand and was born in a devout Muslim family in Bokhara. Renouncing worldly ties, he took to a spiritual path, journeying through various tirthas, including Mecca, Medina, Delhi, Ajmer, Meerut, Gujarat, and finally Odisha. Renowned as both an Ishwar Premi and Khuda Bhakt, Bukhari Baba embodied spiritual universality, gaining respect from both Hindus and Muslims. According to Sterling’s History, he arrived in the forested Kaipadar region around 1953, where a miraculous incident occurred—he struck the ground with an iron rod, causing water to gush out, which still fills the well at his shrine today. He formed a spiritual bond with a Sadhu he met there and later received support from Gajapati Ramachandra Deva, the king of Odisha, who built an ashram for him. Baba's fame spread across India due to his humility, miracles, and teachings of unity. A settlement grew around the site as devotees gathered. During deep meditation, an ant-hill reportedly formed around him, and villagers witnessed a divine glow on his face before offering their final respects. He is venerated as a Zinda Pir (Living Saint), and his shrine remains a place of spiritual harmony. Rituals include playing the nagara (drum), offering sandal paste, flowers, and lighting ghee lamps. Thursdays are especially sacred, marked by the distribution of khiri and feeding of fakirs. The shrine upholds a strong message of communal unity—welcoming all castes and creeds, with Hindus and Muslims worshipping and sharing together in peace.
