Tucked behind the Bihar State Co-operative Bank and just off Ashok Rajpath, one of Patna’s oldest arterial roads, lies the Lawn Ki Jama Masjid—a unique and peaceful mosque known both for its spiritual presence and its expansive green setting. Located in Dujra Diara, a neighborhood that borders the Ganga, this mosque has quietly stood as a beacon of faith, community, and serenity for decades. The masjid derives its name—“Lawn Ki Jama Masjid”—from the wide, grassy courtyard that surrounds it. Unlike most tightly packed urban masjids, this one offers worshippers the rare pleasure of praying in the open air, especially during large gatherings. The lawn itself becomes an extension of the prayer space during Jumu’ah (Friday prayers) and Eid, with dozens of prayer rugs lining the grass and the cool breeze from the nearby Ganges weaving through rows of worshippers. The mosque was likely established in the 1970s or 1980s, coinciding with the development of the Ashok Rajpath area as a major administrative and educational hub. Today, it serves not only the residents of Dujra Diara but also students and employees from nearby institutions such as Patna College, PMCH, and various coaching centers and banks. Architecturally, the masjid is a single-story structure with an arched entrance, a flat roof, and a simple mihrab framed with white and green tiles. There is a small minaret atop the roof for Adhan (call to prayer), and loudspeakers broadcast the call across the surrounding neighborhoods. The prayer hall accommodates about 150–180 people inside, with many more filling the lawn during peak prayers. Adjacent to the hall is a well-organized wudu (ablution) area, and a small storage room houses Qur’ans, prayer mats, and community maintenance items. The mosque committee, made up of local elders and shopkeepers, ensures cleanliness and organizes seasonal repainting, fan maintenance, and water supply management. During Ramadan, the mosque transforms into a hive of spiritual activity. Taraweeh prayers are conducted with sincerity, often led by local huffaz (Qur’an memorizers), and iftar is collectively arranged with community donations. The open-air nature of the mosque makes warm summer nights especially memorable—families gather, children run on the lawn after prayers, and the mosque glows under string lights. The Eid prayers are grand affairs—hundreds gather on the lawn, dressed in festive clothes, exchanging salaams and sweets. Local vendors set up stalls outside, turning the day into a celebration of unity and joy. For the people of Dujra and beyond, Lawn Ki Jama Masjid is more than a prayer space—it's a community memory. A green patch of peace in the middle of the city’s historic sprawl, it reminds worshippers of the timeless blend of nature, faith, and togetherness.
