The Dargah of Hazrat Anjanpeer Baba, also spelled as Anjaanpeer Baba, is a centuries-old shrine nestled in the heart of Hajipur at Anjaanpeer Chowk, Adalpur. A key religious and cultural site in Vaishali district, Bihar, this dargah represents not just the spiritual legacy of a revered Sufi saint but also stands as a living symbol of communal harmony and timeless devotion. Local lore describes Hazrat Anjanpeer Baba as a wandering Sufi fakir who arrived in the region several centuries ago, possibly during the later Mughal or early colonial period. Though not much is known about his origin—hence the name “Anjan” meaning “unknown”—his spiritual presence and mystical wisdom quickly attracted followers from various backgrounds. Today, the dargah is visited by people of all faiths, including Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs, who offer chadars, flowers, and incense while seeking blessings for health, children, livelihood, or peace. Architecturally, the shrine is modest yet soul-stirring. The tomb of the saint lies under a small domed structure, which is painted in white and green—colors often associated with peace and the Sufi tradition. The entrance is adorned with fluttering colorful threads, prayer flags, and devotional graffiti offered by visitors who return after their mannat (wishes) are fulfilled. Adjacent to the main dargah is a shaded courtyard that fills up on Thursdays, the saint’s spiritual day, when qawwals and faqirs gather to sing praises of Allah and His saints. The annual Urs, commemorating the saint’s death anniversary (viewed in Sufism as a ‘wedding with the Divine’), is the highlight of the dargah’s spiritual calendar. The event draws thousands of devotees from across Bihar and neighboring states. The area transforms into a vibrant spiritual fair, complete with qawwali nights, communal langars (free meals), and rituals of reverence that continue till dawn. The secular character of the dargah is especially visible during Urs, when volunteers from all religions help in managing crowds and distributing food. Besides spiritual fulfillment, the dargah has long been regarded as a site of healing, particularly for those struggling with emotional distress, unexplained illness, or familial discord. It is common to see women tying red threads on the latticed walls, children being brought in for nazar (evil eye) removal rituals, and men quietly sitting in reflection. The caretakers or khadims of the shrine come from families that have served the dargah for generations, preserving both the physical space and the oral traditions associated with Hazrat Anjanpeer Baba. Surrounded by shops selling religious items and located at a bustling chowk that also bears the saint’s name, the dargah is an integral part of Hajipur’s cultural identity. It serves as a daily reminder that faith can unite across boundaries, that the sacred does not discriminate, and that in silence and song, seekers still find the divine.
