Nestled in the serene surroundings of Chand Sarae village in Bihar’s Vaishali district, Gorigama Dargah Masjid serves as both a mosque and a spiritual dargah (shrine). Revered by locals for its peaceful atmosphere and connection to local Sufi traditions, the site is a confluence of prayer, reflection, and community bonding. The mosque accommodates daily salah and Jumu’ah prayers, while the adjacent dargah is visited by devotees seeking blessings. Its dual religious significance makes it a prominent faith destination in the region, attracting visitors from nearby villages, especially during Urs and other commemorative occasions.
The Gorigama Dargah Masjid, located in the Chand Sarae area of Vaishali district in Bihar, is a rare and spiritually rich location that integrates the functions of a mosque with the reverence of a Sufi dargah. It holds a special place in the hearts of local Muslims and Sufi followers alike, being both a site of congregational prayer and a place of spiritual retreat and supplication. The name Gorigama is believed to originate from the early settlement patterns in the region, with the masjid and dargah evolving organically as the spiritual and communal epicenter of the surrounding hamlets. The masjid, though simple in structure, is well-maintained by the local community. Its clean marble flooring, freshly painted green and white walls, and humble minaret give it a calm, welcoming appearance. The main prayer hall can accommodate around 100 to 150 people during regular prayers, and is often filled to capacity on Fridays and during Eid gatherings. Adjacent to the mosque lies a small but deeply respected dargah, said to be the final resting place of a local Sufi saint who arrived here centuries ago, possibly during the 18th or early 19th century. Although historical records about the saint’s name and lineage are limited, oral traditions passed down through generations venerate him as a man of great spiritual stature who preached peace, love, and humility. During Urs, the death anniversary of the saint, the entire village lights up with lamps and welcomes visitors who offer chadar (sacred cloth), flowers, and prayers. This combined site of a masjid and dargah reflects the unique spiritual fusion prevalent in many parts of rural India, where Sufism and orthodox Islam often walk hand-in-hand. While regular Islamic prayers and rituals are strictly observed in the mosque area, the dargah draws people from across religions and sects—Hindus, Muslims, and others—especially women, who pray for family welfare, health, and fertility. The imam of the masjid plays a dual role—leading salah and also maintaining the spiritual sanctity of the dargah. A small madarsa operates nearby, providing religious instruction to children from the village. During Ramzan, the mosque becomes a hub for taraweeh and iftar gatherings, while the dargah remains open for night-long dhikr (remembrance of God) sessions by visiting Sufi musicians and local devotees. Despite its remote rural setting, the Gorigama Dargah Masjid is relatively easy to locate and access via narrow but paved village roads. The site is supported and preserved by local donations and community-led upkeep, ensuring it remains a living heritage of faith, intergenerational wisdom, and rural spirituality.
