Kushak Mahal

The structure referred to as "Kushak," meaning "King," was built during the reign of Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlaq between 1351 and 1388 AD. It likely served as a hunting lodge or "Shikar Ghar" for the Sultan. Constructed from rubble and sand, the building features three arched openings, leading into three separate compartments. Positioned on a 5-meter-high terrace, it offers a commanding view of the surrounding area, adding both a functional and strategic aspect to its design. This structure is a testament to the architectural ingenuity of the Tughlaq period, blending utility with aesthetic grandeur. Kushak Mahal, also known as Shikargah, is a historical structure built in the 14th century by Firoz Shah Tughlaq, a ruler of the Tughlaq dynasty in Delhi. Originally designed as a hunting lodge, it offered the sultan and his entourage a place to rest during hunting expeditions. The building is situated within the grounds of Teen Murti Bhavan, which now houses a museum dedicated to India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and is near the Nehru Planetarium. The architecture of Kushak Mahal reflects the simplicity and strength typical of Tughlaq-era designs. The structure is near square-shaped, featuring three open bays, each divided into three compartments. Constructed using local stone, it showcases the military and functional nature of Tughlaq architecture, blending practicality with a sense of grandeur. Today, Kushak Mahal is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) as part of India's cultural heritage. The peaceful surroundings of Teen Murti Bhavan add a modern historical layer to this medieval structure, offering a glimpse into the recreational practices of the Tughlaq court and connecting the rich history of Delhi's medieval period with the later developments of the city.
