Situated in the heart of Mahawat Toli, one of the oldest and historically rich neighborhoods of Bettiah, the Jama Masjid is not only a revered place of worship but also an architectural and cultural landmark of West Champaran. Widely recognized for its central role in the religious life of the town's Muslim community, the masjid serves as a magnet for congregational prayers, religious instruction, and intergenerational bonding. The origins of the mosque trace back to the pre-independence era, when the locality of Mahawat Toli was known for its horse trainers, artisans, and scholars. Oral history suggests that the masjid was built by the local Mahawat community, possibly in the early 20th century, with successive generations maintaining and expanding its structure. It has since evolved from a modest prayer hall into a fully functional complex that includes multiple entrances, a large courtyard, and facilities for ablution (wudhu). From an architectural standpoint, Jama Masjid bears Mughal-inspired elements with pointed arches, ornamental columns, and a large central dome flanked by two minarets. The white and green painted exterior is both dignified and welcoming. A tall mehrab marks the qibla wall inside, with intricate calligraphy of Quranic verses above it. The main prayer hall is spacious, covered with prayer rugs, and can accommodate hundreds of worshippers, particularly during Friday prayers (Jumu'ah), when it is filled to capacity. The mosque committee, comprising local elders, teachers, and businesspersons, ensures the day-to-day maintenance of the mosque and its programs. Five daily prayers are held consistently, with Friday khutbahs delivered by a learned imam who often addresses both spiritual and social matters. During the holy month of Ramadan, the masjid becomes a hub of nightly taraweeh prayers, Quran recitation sessions, and community iftars that are open to all. The educational wing of the mosque hosts regular maktab classes for children. Here, students are taught basic Arabic, Quranic recitation, Islamic history, and the ethical principles of Islam. These classes, led by local ustads, are instrumental in instilling religious literacy and moral consciousness among young learners.
