The mosque, known for its simplicity and tranquility, offers a sacred environment for daily prayers, religious discussions, and Quranic learning. Locally referred to as "Badi Masjid" (the big mosque), it serves as a spiritual anchor for both elders and youth, especially during Friday congregational prayers and festivals like Eid. Located in the heart of Behara village, within Bihar's West Champaran district, Jhumka Badi Masjid stands as a modest yet meaningful symbol of Islamic faith and communal harmony. The name “Badi Masjid,” translating to “The Big Mosque,” may not signify architectural grandeur, but rather its central spiritual significance to the people of the region. Over the years, it has grown into a hub for prayer, reflection, education, and community interaction. Believed to have been established in the early 1990s, the mosque was the result of local effort—constructed through donations, volunteer work, and community vision. Despite limited financial resources, the locals prioritized the need for a permanent and accessible space to perform their daily salah (prayers). It started as a single prayer hall and was gradually developed into a larger space as the community expanded. The mosque’s architecture is humble yet purposeful. Its prayer hall features a simple mihrab (a niche indicating the qibla), with a small minbar used for the Friday khutbah (sermon). A single minaret stands beside the mosque—not tall or elaborately designed, but functional, echoing the adhan (call to prayer) across the nearby fields and homes. The exterior is painted in calming tones, and a metal gate guards the entrance, often adorned with seasonal decorations during festivals like Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Inside, the floor is lined with prayer rugs, and the Qur’an and other Islamic texts are neatly placed on shelves for easy access. On Fridays, the mosque sees a larger gathering, with men and older boys coming from neighboring lanes to attend the Jumu’ah prayers. During Ramadan, the mosque becomes more vibrant—hosting taraweeh prayers, iftar gatherings, and Quran recitation programs. One of the mosque’s essential functions is religious education. Community members contribute regularly to the maintenance fund, which covers electricity bills, water supply, and minor repairs. Occasional fundraising campaigns help finance structural enhancements such as painting, tile work, or roofing. The mosque committee is run by local elders and often holds consultations to decide on community matters.
