Mahaldar Khan, who constructed this garden and the Tripolia Gates in the 18th century, held the significant position of Nazir during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah. It is believed that Mahaldar Khan was a title rather than his real name, which was Ghulam Nabi. This garden, located near the Mughal city of Shahjahanabad?established by the renowned Mughal ruler Shah Jahan?stood as a testament to the grandeur of Mughal landscaping and architecture. The area around the gateway, situated on Karnal Road (historically known as the Grand Trunk Road), was once adorned with numerous gardens. Unfortunately, these gardens have not survived the passage of time and no longer exist. Architecturally, the Tripolia Gate is a square structure that exemplifies the Mughal style of construction. The gateway is characterized by its pointed arches, vaulted ceilings, and foliated arches embellished with intricate jali work, a hallmark of Mughal artistry. A distinctive feature of the gateway is the pair of projecting jharokhas or oriel windows, crafted from finely carved red sandstone, which adds a touch of elegance to the structure. The main body of the gateway is built using Lakhori bricks, a material commonly employed during the Mughal period for its durability and aesthetic appeal. Together, these architectural elements reflect the sophistication and craftsmanship that defined Mughal monuments of that era.
