Markaz Masjid Shakoor Khan, located at 38, Masjid Shakoor Khan Road in the Itwara–Azad Market area near Peer Gate, is a prominent mosque and religious center in the old walled part of Bhopal . This mosque is deeply rooted in the spiritual and communal life of the city. Notably, it served as the original venue for the Bhopal Tablighi Ijtema, an annual Islamic congregation initiated around the time of India’s independence. The gathering began here in 1948 (or 1949, as records vary slightly) as a modest gathering and later moved to the larger Taj-ul-Masajid as its attendance rapidly grew . Masjid Shakoor Khan also played a vital role in the early stages of Islamic education in the city. In April 1950, a madrasa—an Islamic educational institution—was established adjacent to the mosque, under the guidance of Maulana Muhammad Imran Khan Nadwi Azhari, with encouragement from Allama Syed Sulaiman Nadwi. This school served the community until July 20, 1950, when it was relocated to the Taj-ul-Masajid and renamed Darul Uloom Tajul Masajid . Over time, Shakoor Khan Mosque became not just a place of worship, but a launching point for broader religious and educational activities in Bhopal, particularly playing a foundational role in what grew into the iconic and monumental Taj-ul-Masajid.
