Nestled amidst the bustling modernity of Shahpur Jat, Delhi, the Tohfewala Gumbad stands as a silent witness to history, enveloped by the rapid urbanization and commercialization that characterize the area today. Once a traditional village home to the Jat community, Shahpur Jat has transformed into a vibrant hub of designer boutiques and upscale shops, with the Tohfewala Gumbad now somewhat obscured by its contemporary surroundings. Finding the entrance to this hidden gem can be a challenge, as the monument is tucked away behind a narrow lane between houses and shops, in a part of the market that seems to encroach upon its historical grounds. The structure itself is a large, domed chamber set within a rectangular courtyard, close to the remnants of the Siri Fort walls, Delhi's second city. The walls, constructed from rubble masonry with a rendered exterior, are unadorned and slightly slope towards the outside. While the exact builder of the monument is unknown, its architecture is believed to reflect the construction style during the Khilji Dynasty's reign (1290-1320 AD). The dome rests on an octagonal base, or drum, adorned with battlement-like kanguras. Inside, the simplicity of the dome is highlighted by niches at the base and recessed arched corners, with the central prayer niche, or mihrab, featuring three arched recesses. The gumbad has three arched entrances on one side, two smaller arches on the other, and small arched windows high in the walls that allow sunlight to filter in. The courtyard hints at additional structures, possibly double-aisled pillared chambers that once stood on either side of the domed chamber. The Tohfewala Gumbad, thus, remains a captivating relic of Delhi's historical past, quietly enduring amidst the transformation of its surroundings.
