Salim Garh Fort

Salim Garh Fort

Salimgarh Fort, located in Delhi, was built in 1546 AD by Salim Shah Suri, the son of Sher Shah Suri, in a former island of the Yamuna River. The fort's history is closely tied to the rise and fall of the Sur dynasty and the Mughal Empire. In 1540 AD, Sher Shah Suri defeated Mughal Emperor Humayun and established the Sur Empire, which ruled Delhi until 1555 AD when Humayun regained his throne after defeating Sikander Suri. The fort witnessed significant historical events during the Mughal era. In the later years of the Mughal period, Emperor Shah Jahan, credited with completing the Shahjahanabad (Old Delhi) in 1639 AD, is said to have camped at Salimgarh Fort. Additionally, it is believed that Humayun camped there for three days before launching his successful campaign to recapture Delhi. Aurangzeb, a later Mughal emperor, converted Salimgarh Fort into a prison, a use that was continued by the British after they took control of Delhi in 1857. The fort, which once served as a strategic military installation, became notorious for its use as a detention center.
