The Chauburja Mosque, an architectural gem believed to have been built by Feroz Shah Tughlaq in the 14th century, stands as a testament to the grandeur of medieval Indian architecture. The name "Chauburja" translates to ?mosque with four towers,? a reference to the original design of the structure, which featured four domes. Over time, the mosque underwent significant repairs and alterations during the late Mughal period, which altered its original form but did not diminish its historical importance. The mosque is believed to have been initially constructed as a mausoleum, possibly as part of a larger palace complex known as Kushk-i-Shikar or Kushk-i-Jahan-Numa, associated with the Tughlaq dynasty. The layout of the building is intriguing, with a central chamber surrounded by smaller chambers on all sides, indicating its intended function as a tomb and place of reverence. One of the notable features of the mosque is the mihrab, or prayer niche, which is located in the western chamber, marking the direction of Mecca for prayer. The upper portion of the mosque is dominated by a domed chamber situated in the southwest corner, adding a sense of grandeur to the otherwise modest structure. Over time, many of the smaller chambers around the central space have disappeared, leaving behind a hauntingly beautiful, double-storeyed structure that continues to captivate visitors. The mosque's historical significance is further emphasized by its role during the Revolt of 1857, when British forces camped in the Northern Ridge, near the mosque. This connection to a pivotal moment in Indian history adds a layer of depth to the mosque?s already rich historical narrative, making it not just an architectural marvel, but also a symbol of resistance during colonial times.
