The Bagh-i-Alam Ka Gumbad, located in the northeast corner of Delhi's Deer Park, is a significant and impressive monument dating back to the Lodhi era. This tomb was built for Shihab-ud-din Taj Khan, a Muslim saint who lived during the reign of Sikhander Lodhi and passed away around 1501. The structure is regarded as one of the finest examples of Lodhi tombs in Delhi, as noted by historian and author Lucy Peck. In contrast to other contemporary structures, the Bagh-i-Alam Ka Gumbad stands out due to its construction using primarily local stone, with subtle elements of ceramic and red sandstone that enhance its aesthetic. The tomb?s design is characteristic of Lodhi-era architecture, with an octagonal interior, which is a common feature in this period. The drum of the dome is adorned with sixteen blind niches, a design choice that is both functional and decorative. The circular dome itself rests upon these niches and is crowned by a graceful lotus finial, contributing to the structure's elegant appearance. The architectural style of the tomb features relatively shallow squinches, which, while primarily ornamental, play an important role in supporting the dome. On the exterior, the ornamentation of the Bagh-i-Alam Ka Gumbad is minimal but effective. A two-register calligraphic plaque adorns the fa?ade, adding a touch of intricate detail to the structure. Additionally, the tomb's walls feature small "pigeon holes," which allow a limited amount of natural light to filter into the interior, casting soft illumination that enhances the atmosphere within. The exterior facades are punctuated by six niches on either side of the central bay, but only two of the lower-level openings are actual windows, allowing for a more controlled entry of light. This understated yet refined approach to ornamentation and design reflects the elegance and simplicity of the Lodhi architectural style, making the Bagh-i-Alam Ka Gumbad a remarkable testament to the period's cultural and artistic achievements.
