The Barapullah Bridge, a historical landmark in Delhi, was built nearly 400 years ago by Mihr Banu Agha, under the reign of Mughal Emperor Jahangir. Historians suggest that the bridge was commissioned by Jahangir himself, serving as an important passageway for the Mughals. It was primarily used for crossing the Yamuna River, facilitating travel to key Mughal sites like the Nizamuddin Dargah and Humayun's Tomb, especially when returning from Agra. In 1628, the road connecting the bridge to Humayun's Tomb was a picturesque, tree-lined avenue, making it one of the most beautiful and prominent bridges in Delhi during that period. However, over time, the bridge fell into neglect and disrepair. In August 2024, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) initiated a restoration project to revive the bridge. The restoration efforts included the removal of accumulated silt and garbage that had cluttered the structure. The goal of these efforts is to restore the Barapullah Bridge as a pedestrian-friendly pathway, allowing people to experience its historical significance once again. Architecturally, the bridge is remarkable, featuring 12 piers and 11 arches, with a total length of 200 meters (660 feet), showcasing the advanced engineering and design of the Mughal era.
