Imli Wali Masjid, also known as Masjid Lal Imli or Badi Masjid No Mehrab, is a historic mosque located on Bagh Umrao Dulha Main Road in Bhopal. It is believed to have been built in the late 18th century by Maji Sahiba, the daughter-in-law of Sardar Dost Mohammad Khan, the founder of Bhopal. The mosque derives its name from the red tamarind (imli) tree once found near its premises. Constructed entirely in red sandstone, the mosque reflects architectural influences of Fatehpur Sikri, with finely carved stone pillars, arched entrances, and decorative balcony windows. Unlike most mosques, it is unique for having no mehrab (the niche that indicates the direction of prayer), hence often referred to as “No Mehrab Masjid.” The mosque stands near the Upper Lake, offering a scenic backdrop, and continues to serve as a place of worship while also being admired for its serene atmosphere and heritage value. Its location in Bagh Umrao Dulha, an area also home to a Mauryan-era pillar installed by Shahjehan Begum in the 19th century, further adds to the neighborhood’s historical significance.
