Gauhar Mahal, located on VIP Road near Chowki Talaiya in the Peer Gate area of Bhopal, is one of the city’s most iconic heritage structures. It was built in 1820 by Qudsia Begum (Gohar Begum), the first female ruler of Bhopal, and marked the beginning of the famous Begums’ rule in the region. Spread across nearly 4.65 acres, the palace beautifully blends Mughal and Hindu architectural styles, featuring intricately carved wooden doors, expansive courtyards, arched hallways, frescoes, and secret passages, including one believed to connect to Raisen Fort. Once used as a royal residence and a cultural hub for gatherings, performances, and festivities, the palace later fell into neglect but was revived in recent decades through conservation efforts. Today, Gauhar Mahal stands not only as a symbol of Bhopal’s regal past but also as a cultural center, hosting exhibitions, handicraft fairs, and heritage events, while offering visitors free entry to experience its unique charm and history.
