The Taj Mahal Palace in Bhopal, located in Jahangirabad, was commissioned by Sultan Shah Jahan Begum in 1871 and completed in 1884 after thirteen years of construction at a cost of about ₹30 lakhs. Originally named Raj Mahal, it was later called Taj Mahal by the British Resident, drawing a comparison to the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. The palace is a fine example of Indo-Saracenic architecture, blending Mughal, British, French, Arabic, and Hindu styles, and it once featured nearly 120 rooms, a grand Sheesh Mahal (hall of mirrors), and the famous Sawan Bhadon pavilion, designed to simulate rainfall through an intricate fountain system. Surrounded by lakes and built as part of a larger royal complex that included the Taj-ul-Masajid and Benazir Palace, it showcased both luxury and environmental sensitivity. After independence, the palace temporarily housed Sindhi refugees, which led to damage, and over time it fell into neglect and partial ruin. In 2005, it was declared a state heritage monument, later transferred to the tourism department in 2014, and plans were announced to restore and convert it into a heritage hotel. Today, while much of its past grandeur has faded, the Taj Mahal Palace remains a symbol of Bhopal’s royal legacy and the visionary rule of Shah Jahan Begum.
