The Shahi Jama Masjid in Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh, stands as a testament to the architectural grandeur and cultural confluence of the 16th century. Commissioned by Adil Shah IV of the Faruqi dynasty, the mosque's construction commenced in 1588 and was completed in 1590. It was intended as the royal congregational mosque for Burhanpur, strategically located at the city's heart to serve both spiritual and administrative purposes. Architecturally, the mosque is renowned for its unique roofless design, where intersecting symmetrical arches form the ceiling. The façade features 15 arched openings, and the structure is flanked by two five-storied minarets, each approximately 36 meters tall. Constructed from black stone sourced from Mandu, the mosque is also known as 'Kali Masjid' due to the distinctive material. Inside, the prayer hall is five bays deep and houses 17 mihrab niches, with inscriptions in both Arabic and Sanskrit, marking it as a rare example of bilingual Islamic architecture in India.
