Lat Masjid, also known as Lāṭ Masjid or Ladh Masjid, is a significant 15th-century mosque located on the outskirts of Dhar, Madhya Pradesh. Constructed in 1405 CE by Dilawar Khan, the first Sultan of Malwa, it served as a Friday mosque following his declaration of independence from Delhi and the establishment of the Malwa Sultanate. The mosque's name derives from a fragmentary iron pillar (lāṭ in Hindi) situated within its compound, believed to have been erected by a Paramara ruler to commemorate a military victory . Architecturally, Lat Masjid exemplifies Indo-Islamic design. The structure comprises a large courtyard surrounded by arcades on all sides, with the prayer hall featuring four bays and a dome over the miḥrāb. Notably, some of the mosque's pillars and lintels were repurposed from older Hindu and Jain temples, reflecting the region's historical architectural amalgamation . The mosque is protected as a Monument of National Importance by the Archaeological Survey of India under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act. Despite its age, the iron pillar remains remarkably well-preserved, showcasing the advanced metallurgical skills of the era.
