The Jama Masjid of Defence Colony, an architectural marvel from the Lodi period, dates back to around 1488 AD and is associated with KhwajaSara Basti Khan, an important noble during the reign of Sikander Lodi. Originally, Basti Khan enclosed an extensive piece of land near Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti, where he built a mosque, a baoli (stepwell), and his tomb, accessible through an impressive gateway. Though the baoli dried up centuries ago, the gateway and tomb have survived, standing as a testament to the region's rich historical and architectural legacy. The structure exemplifies the Indo-Persian architectural style, combining intricate design elements with functionality. Built on a rectangular base, the tomb features a domical superstructure supported by an octagonal drum adorned with the kangoora pattern. The exterior showcases a series of arches on each side, with the eastern wall housing a corbel arch, while the other walls display recessed pointed arches framed by rectangular posts. Decorative elements include four arches on both the northern and southern sides, and projected jharokhas (overhanging balconies) on the western side that enhance the overall design. The parapet, encircling the entire structure, is intricately designed with a kangoora motif, adding to its visual appeal. Corner minarets lend a majestic quality to the tomb, while plaster minarets emphasize the structural joints, highlighting the architectural complexity of the monument. Constructed using lakhori bricks and lime mortar, the plinth is made of stone, ensuring stability. A traditional wooden door adds authenticity to the historical site. Over the years, the structure has undergone multiple renovations, including the application of lime coats and the addition of tiles to the floor. This site reflects the grandeur of Lodi-period architecture and provides insight into the life and contributions of KhwajaSara Basti Khan. His vision of an extensive compound, blending religious and residential elements, remains a significant cultural heritage site in modern Delhi..
