The Kali Masjid, constructed in 1370-1371 AD, stands as a testament to the architectural and cultural heritage of the Tughlaq era. It was built by Khan-i-Jahan Junan Shah, the Wazir (minister) of Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlaq, who embraced Islam in 1323. The mosque was designed to embody the aesthetics of the Indo-Persian architectural style, a distinctive fusion of Indian and Persian elements that flourished during the Tughlaq period. This style is evident in the mosque's intricate design and craftsmanship, showcasing a blend of geometric precision and artistic detailing. The mosque is entered through a staircase that leads to a rectangular gateway adorned with arched designs, creating an imposing yet inviting facade. The top edge of the entrance is decorated with Kangoora patterns, while cylindrical, tapering minarets flank either side of the gateway, enhancing its grandeur. Upon passing through the entrance, visitors find themselves in a spacious courtyard surrounded by an arcade of pointed arches. These arches are supported by sturdy rectangular pilasters and pillars, providing both structural integrity and visual elegance. The courtyard?s walls are embellished with two rows of Kangoora patterns, further contributing to the aesthetic appeal of the structure. The floor of the mosque features a combination of plain and ornamented marble tiles, reflecting the intricate craftsmanship of the era. The arcaded corridors encircling the courtyard are covered with vaulted ceilings, adding a sense of depth and harmony to the design. One of the key features of the mosque is an inscription on the eastern gateway, which is one of several entrances to the structure, offering insights into its historical significance. The mosque was constructed using Delhi Quartzite stone and rubble masonry, materials known for their strength and durability. These were then coated with lime plaster, not only to enhance the building?s resilience but also to provide a smooth, refined surface that reflects the architectural sophistication of the time. The Kali Masjid, with its meticulous design and enduring materials, stands as a remarkable example of the Indo-Persian style and the rich architectural legacy of the Tughlaq dynasty.
