The gateway, a remnant of the medieval period, is intricately linked to the legacy of Nasiruddin Mahmud Chiragh Dehlavi, widely known as Chiragh-e-Delhi. Born around 1274 in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, Chiragh-e-Delhi was a revered Sufi saint, and this structure stands as a testament to his historical and cultural significance. Designed in the Indo-Persian architectural style, the gateway was once a prominent feature of the area, reflecting the rich heritage of the time. However, the passage of centuries has taken a toll on its grandeur. Today, only half of the original gateway remains intact, serving as a silent witness to its storied past. The surviving portion boasts a double-arched entrance, a hallmark of its design, along with a niche strategically placed on the right side. The Kangoora battlements that crown the gateway further accentuate its historical and aesthetic appeal, offering a glimpse into the architectural practices of the era. Constructed using rubble stone masonry and lime mortar, the gateway was originally coated with a layer of lime plaster, remnants of which still cling to the structure, hinting at its former splendor. Unfortunately, modern interventions have altered its appearance significantly. Additions such as bricks, cement, and an iron gate have introduced a stark contrast to the original design, detracting from its authenticity. Encroachments have also contributed to its degradation, with nearby developments infringing upon the space and obscuring its historical essence. Despite these challenges, the gateway remains a vital link to the past, emphasizing the urgent need for its preservation. Its current state underscores the delicate balance between conserving heritage and accommodating modern realities. Protecting this gateway is crucial not only to safeguard a piece of history but also to honor the enduring legacy of Chiragh-e-Delhi.
