Safa Masjid, situated in Ponda, Goa, is a historic Islamic structure built in 1560 by Ibrahim Adil Shah I of Bijapur. This mosque is one of the last surviving examples of the Muslim architectural heritage in Goa and is known for its simple yet striking design. Constructed with laterite stone, the mosque features a rectangular prayer hall with a sloping terracotta-tiled roof that is reminiscent of Goan architecture. The surrounding area is adorned with lush greenery and includes a tank with stone-carved steps, which adds to the mosque's serene ambiance. The Safa Masjid is believed to have been a part of a larger complex that included gardens, fountains, and additional buildings, which were destroyed during the Portuguese inquisition in Goa. Despite the destruction, the mosque itself has survived and remains a significant cultural landmark. It stands as a symbol of the harmonious blend of Islamic and Goan architectural styles, reflecting the multicultural history of the region. Today, Safa Masjid is not only a place of worship but also a site of historical and cultural interest. It attracts visitors from around the world who are intrigued by its architecture and history. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has recognized the mosque as a heritage site and continues to preserve its legacy.
