The mosque attributed to Mahmud Begada, built likely during the later years of Ahmad Shah I's reign (1430?1440), is a historical marvel reflecting the architectural synthesis of Islamic and Hindu styles. This mosque, named after Rani Rupamati, whom Mahmud Begada married following the death of Qutubuddin, stands as an emblem of Gujarat's rich cultural heritage. Measuring 105 feet in length, 46 feet in breadth, and 32 feet in height, it features a high central arch, three grand domes, elegant minarets, intricately carved galleries, and a beautifully adorned mihrab. The three domes are interconnected by a flat roof, a distinctive architectural feature. The mosque's side entrances lead to balcony windows, each culminating in a latticework window, adding an air of delicacy to the robust structure. Each dome is supported by rows of twelve intricately carved pillars, while smaller domes adorn the front and rear sections of the central domes, as well as the four corners of the mosque. The central section of the mosque is notably elevated, allowing for a pierced clerestory that supports the central dome, enhancing its grandeur and providing natural illumination. Despite the 1819 Rann of Kutch earthquake, which damaged the minarets, the finely detailed bases of these minarets remain a highlight of the mosque's intricate design. While the mosque represents an ambitious attempt to merge the arched elements of Islamic architecture with the flat structures of Hindu design, the fusion is not without its challenges. The stark simplicity of the central arch contrasts sharply with the ornate upper cornice and richly detailed side minarets, creating an interesting yet somewhat disjointed aesthetic. Adjacent to the mosque is a tomb complex featuring a large central dome flanked by two smaller domes, housing the tombs of Rani Rupamati and another queen. The interior of this dome is richly decorated with intricate fretwork, showcasing the artistry of the time. This mosque and its adjoining structures stand as enduring testaments to the architectural experimentation and cultural amalgamation of the Sultanate period in Gujarat.
