The Jama Masjid, also known as Jumah Mosque or Jami' Masjid, is a significant mosque in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, built in 1424 during the reign of Sultan Ahmad Shah I. An inscription on its central mihrab commemorates its inauguration on January 4, 1424 (1st Safar A.H. 827). Situated in the old walled city near the Bhadra Fort area on Gandhi Road, the mosque lies a short distance from the Teen Darwaza or Tripolia Gate. It was the fifth mosque built during Ahmad Shah I's reign, differing from its predecessors due to its grandeur and size. The mosque complex features a large paved courtyard with an ablution tank at the center, accessible from three directions. Its prayer hall, emblematic of Gujarat-style architecture, is supported by 260 intricately carved pillars, some repurposed from Hindu or Jain temples, and adorned with 15 domes arranged at three roof levels. Unique syncretic elements, such as domes resembling lotus flowers and pillars with bell motifs, highlight its Indo-Muslim architectural influence. The prayer hall's Qibla wall, facing west, is decorated with colored marble and features five mihrabs, with a central white marble crescent marking the imam's prayer spot. The mosque's main entrance was once framed by "shaking minarets," partially destroyed by earthquakes in 1819 and 1956, reducing them to remnants that still frame the entrance. The mosque remains a testament to the rich architectural and cultural heritage of the region.
