Nestled in the rural outskirts of Bareilly, the Dargah of Hazrat Jang Bahadur Shah Miyan stands as a quiet testament to the rich tapestry of Sufi heritage in Rohilkhand. Hazrat Jang Bahadur Shah Miyan, affectionately called Baag Wale Miyan due to his legendary affinity for gardens and horticulture as metaphors for spiritual cultivation, was a prominent Sufi saint of the Chishti or Qadiri order during the late Mughal era. Born in the mid-18th century in the Bareilly region, he was renowned for his ascetic lifestyle, profound knowledge of Islamic mysticism, and emphasis on love, tolerance, and devotion to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). His teachings, disseminated through poetry and oral traditions, focused on the inner purification of the soul (tazkiyah) and the unity of creation under divine mercy, aligning with the broader Barelvi-Sufi ethos prevalent in Uttar Pradesh. The shrine itself comprises a central mausoleum (mazar) housing the saint's grave, surrounded by a small courtyard ideal for zikr (remembrance of God) gatherings. Adjacent to it is a modest mosque with a single dome and mihrab adorned with basic Arabic calligraphy quoting verses from the Quran on divine grace.
