Rani no Hajiro, located near Manek Chowk to the east of Ahmed Shah's Tomb in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, is a historically significant mausoleum. Built high above the ground, the structure is accessed through a grand, lofty gateway that leads into a courtyard surrounded by a trellised cloister. These cloisters feature intricately carved stone screens, exemplifying the fine craftsmanship of the Gujarat Sultanate period. The square open enclosure, measuring 36.58 meters on each side, is believed to have been constructed around 1445. The courtyard houses eight elaborately carved marble tombs, belonging to the queens of Ahmed Shah I and other rulers of the Gujarat Sultanate. The tombs display intricate inlay work made of mother-of-pearl and metal, reflecting the rich artistic traditions of the era. The principal tomb within the complex is that of Mughalai Bibi, the wife of Muhammad Shah II and the mother of Mahmud Begada. Crafted in white marble, this tomb is adorned with exquisite carvings and encircled by a Persian inscription in delicate relief. Adjacent to this is the tomb of Mirki or Murki Bibi, the wife of Shah-e-Alam, sister of a queen, and daughter of the Jam of Sindh. This tomb, originally embellished with mother-of-pearl inlays, is constructed in black marble. Both tombs are draped in brocade fabric, a textile style that flourished during the reign of Ahmed Shah I. The architecture of Rani no Hajiro is notable for its amalgamation of Hindu, Jain, and Islamic styles, particularly evident in the intricate stone tracery and carvings that adorn the tombs and cloisters. This blend of architectural traditions creates a visually striking and culturally significant monument. The tomb complex is still maintained by Muslim families residing within its premises, who have taken up the responsibility of preserving this historical site. Their care ensures that the legacy of the queens and the architectural brilliance of the Gujarat Sultanate continue to endure.
