The mosque, believed to have been constructed around 1560 by Baba Lului, also known as Baba Muhammad Jafar, is a significant historical and architectural landmark. Baba Lului, reputed to be a pearl merchant, commissioned the construction of the mosque, which showcases intricate design and craftsmanship. The mosque's interior spans 69 feet in length and 37 feet in width, providing a spacious and serene environment for worshippers. It is supported by twelve imposing two-storey pillars that uphold the central dome, a key feature of the structure. In addition to these twelve pillars, there are forty-four more pillars distributed throughout the mosque, which support the roof and the arches adorning the facade. The rear wall of the mosque is adorned with four perforated stone windows, allowing light to filter into the space, while the three mihrabs, crafted from exquisite marble, add a touch of elegance to the interior. The mosque also boasts two minarets, one at each end of the facade. Each minaret has a base measuring fourteen square feet and is beautifully decorated with floral patterns in its niches, contributing to the mosque's overall aesthetic appeal. However, the mosque was significantly damaged during the 2001 Gujarat earthquake, causing considerable concern for its preservation. Fortunately, it was restored by the Archaeological Survey of India, ensuring that this architectural treasure continues to stand as a testament to the region's rich heritage and cultural history.
