Masjid Noni Kuan

Masjid Noni Kuan

Masjid Noni Kuan, located in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, is a historic mosque reflecting early Delhi Sultanate architecture. Built in the 13th century, it features traditional elements like a central dome and marble flooring, serving as a key site for congregational prayers in the region.

Masjid Noni Kuan stands as a testament to the architectural legacy of the Delhi Sultanate era in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh. Constructed during the reign of Sultan Shamsuddin Iltutmish in 1223 AD, the mosque was erected under the governorship of his son Rukn-ud-din Firoz, as documented in historical inscriptions and Archaeological Survey of India records. This period marked Badaun's prominence as a northern frontier post of the Sultanate, with the mosque embodying Persian and Afghan influences through its imposing structure and intricate design. The mosque follows the traditional courtyard plan, characterized by a large central dome—the largest of its kind in any Indian mosque at the time—flanked by two additional domes and five smaller ones. Its floor is crafted from white marble (Sang-e-MarMar), enhancing the serene atmosphere for worship. The premises include a hauz (pond) for ritual ablutions and three wuzu khanas (washing and seating areas), underscoring its functional role in Islamic practices. Entry is through three gateways, with the main one facing the road, constructed from red marble and rising approximately 100 feet, symbolizing grandeur and accessibility for large congregations. As one of India's third-oldest surviving mosques and seventh-largest by capacity (accommodating up to 23,500 worshippers), Masjid Noni Kuan was once the subcontinent's premier congregational site before the expansion of Delhi's Jama Masjid. Situated on an elevated platform in the historic Sotha Mohalla area, it remains the tallest structure in Badaun, offering a commanding view and a peaceful spiritual ambiance. The mosque's design incorporates robust pillars and arched entrances, blending functionality with aesthetic harmony, and continues to host daily prayers, fostering community and devotion.
