Halima Masjid, located in the heart of Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, represents an early example of Islamic architecture from the 13th century, reflecting the cultural and religious transformations brought by the Delhi Sultanate. Constructed during the reign of Sultan Iltutmish, who governed from 1211 to 1236, the mosque was built in 1223 CE as part of efforts to establish key religious centers in provincial capitals like Badaun, which briefly served as a secondary seat of power. Historical records from the Archaeological Survey of India note that Iltutmish commissioned several mosques across his domain to symbolize Islamic authority, and Halima Masjid was erected under the supervision of his son, Rukn-ud-din Firoz, who was governor of the region at the time. The structure incorporates Persian and Afghan stylistic elements, including arched gateways and a simple dome, though on a smaller scale compared to grander edifices like the nearby Jama Masjid Shamsi. The mosque's design features a central prayer hall paved with white marble flooring, flanked by ablution areas and a small hauz (pond) for ritual purification. Its courtyard, surrounded by modest minarets, could originally accommodate several hundred worshippers, underscoring its role as a community hub for daily prayers and Friday congregations. Inscriptions within the mosque, dated to the construction period, affirm its dedication to Islamic worship and mention Iltutmish's patronage, aligning with four similar epigraphs found in contemporary Sultanate mosques. Over the centuries, it has undergone minor restorations in the 14th and 16th centuries to preserve its structural integrity against regional weathering, maintaining its status as a protected heritage site under the Uttar Pradesh state archaeology department. Today, Halima Masjid continues to host regular namaz, drawing local devotees who appreciate its tranquil ambiance and historical aura.
