Dariyakhan Ghummat

Dariya Khan's Tomb, also referred to as Darya Khan's Dome or Ghummat, is a historical medieval brick tomb situated in Shahibaug, Ahmedabad, India

Dariya Khan?s Tomb, also known as Darya Khan?s Dome or Ghummat, is a significant medieval architectural landmark located in Shahibaug, Ahmedabad, India. Dariya Khan was a Gujarati Muslim and a close companion of Sultan Mahmud Begarah. In recognition of his loyalty and service, he was bestowed the title of Khan and awarded the prestigious rank of panjhazari (commander of 5,000 troops) in 1459. Dariya Khan also played a key role in the development of the region, founding the town of Daryapur near Ahmedabad. His tomb, constructed in 1453 during his lifetime, stands as the largest brick tomb in Gujarat, showcasing a unique departure from the stone-based constructions typical of other tombs in Ahmedabad. The tomb is an exemplary piece of Turko-Persian Islamic architecture, characterized by its use of true arches and domes that create a vast, cavernous interior. The structure boasts a large central dome, which is surrounded by sixteen smaller domes, giving the tomb a distinctive and grand appearance. Each of its four sides features five entrances, emphasizing symmetry and accessibility. The interior of the tomb is equally impressive, housing a cenotaph at its center, surrounded by an arcaded verandah that enhances its spatial design. The walls of the tomb are remarkably thick, measuring nine feet, which not only adds to its structural integrity but also underscores its monumental scale. Despite its historical and architectural significance, the site has faced considerable encroachment over the years, threatening its preservation. This encroachment diminishes the grandeur of what was once a splendid testament to the architectural and cultural achievements of medieval Gujarat. Today, the tomb stands as a reminder of the region?s rich history and the enduring legacy of figures like Dariya Khan, who played pivotal roles in shaping the sociopolitical landscape of their time.
