Shaikh Hasan Muhammed Chisti Masjid

Shaikh Hasan Muhammed Chisti masjid or Shahpur Masjid, also known as Shahpur Paththarwali Masjid or Kazi Mohammed Chishti's Masjid

The Hasan Muhammad Chishti Masjid is a significant architectural and spiritual landmark located in the Shahpur neighborhood, to the northwest of the historic city center of Ahmedabad. This mosque is named after Qutb al-Awliya? Shaykh Hasan Muhammad Chishti, a revered spiritual leader of the Sufi Chishtiyya order, renowned for his local influence. An inscription over the mosque's mihrab dates its construction to the years 1565-1566 CE (973 AH), situating it within a historical and cultural context that reflects the region?s Islamic heritage. Architecturally, the mosque is rectangular in form, with its structure enclosed on three sides while opening to the east, where it connects to a courtyard. The fa?ade is supported by eight intricately designed pillars, which are spanned by nine arches, creating an imposing yet harmonious exterior. Above the central five arches of the fa?ade, a second story rises, open to the outside and adding a sense of verticality and prominence to the structure. On either end of the fa?ade are large and ornately designed buttresses, which were likely intended to serve as the bases for minarets. However, these minarets were never completed beyond the first story, leaving the buttresses as distinctive yet incomplete elements of the design. Inside, the mosque features a spacious and elegant prayer hall supported by numerous pillars. The centerpiece of the interior is a large dome, elevated above the central bay of the hall, creating a focal point of architectural grandeur. This dome is supported by twelve sturdy pillars, showcasing the structural ingenuity of the builders. The interior layout is carefully planned, with one aisle separating the domed bay from the qibla wall and the front of the hall. On either side of the dome, three additional aisles extend between the central bay and the side walls, providing a sense of symmetry and balance. This thoughtful design not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the mosque but also serves the practical purpose of accommodating worshippers within a harmonious and spiritually uplifting space.
