Qadri Masjid

Qadri Masjid

Qadri Masjid, located within the revered Dargah-e-Alia Qadria complex in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, serves as a key prayer space for devotees of the Qadri Sufi order. Established in the early 19th century alongside the khanqah, it embodies the spiritual legacy of Sufi saint Shah Ainul Haq Maulana Abdul Majeed Qadri Budauni and continues to host annual Urs celebrations, drawing pilgrims for its serene atmosphere and Qadri traditions.

The Qadri Masjid forms an integral part of the Dargah-e-Alia Qadria, a prominent Sufi shrine and khanqah in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, dedicated to the Qadri spiritual lineage tracing back to the 12th-century founder Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani. In 1235 Hijri (corresponding to 1820 CE), Shah Ainul Haq Maulana Abdul Majeed Qadri Budauni, a revered scholar and saint of the Qadri order, laid the foundation of this khanqah to propagate Qadri and Barkaati teachings. The masjid, constructed as part of this complex, reflects the modest yet spiritually resonant architecture typical of 19th-century Sufi establishments in northern India, featuring simple prayer halls with arched entrances and minimal ornamentation suited to contemplative worship. Situated in the heart of Badaun's historic Molvi Tola neighborhood, the masjid overlooks the shrine where Maulana Abdul Majeed Qadri is interred, fostering a continuous tradition of spiritual guidance passed down through generations of the Usmania family. This lineage includes notable figures like Hazrat Danial Qatari, the first Usmani Qadri settler in Badaun, emphasizing knowledge, devotion, and adherence to Islamic principles. The site has long been a center for Sufi practices, including zikr (remembrance of God) sessions and religious education, attracting followers from across Uttar Pradesh and beyond. Annually, the masjid and dargah host the Urs-e-Qadri, a three-day commemoration of the saint's legacy, marked by qawwali performances, prayers, and communal feasts. The 183rd Urs in 2024 exemplified its enduring draw, with thousands gathering for blessings despite modern challenges. As one of Badaun's key Islamic sites—alongside ancient structures like the 13th-century Jama Masjid—the Qadri Masjid underscores the city's role as a Sufi hub, preserving Qadri mysticism amid the Ganges region's cultural tapestry. Its unassuming design prioritizes devotion over grandeur, making it a vital space for daily namaz and spiritual retreats.
