Isanpur Ki Masjid

Isanpur Ki Masjid

The Isanpur Mosque, also known as Gumle Masjid or Malik's Isan Masjid, is a significant medieval-era mosque located in the Isanpur area of Ahmedabad, India. This mosque holds historical and architectural importance, serving as a testament to the city?s rich cultural heritage during the medieval period. Built in the 15th century, it is often attributed to Malik, a nobleman or a prominent figure of the time, though the exact historical details surrounding its construction are still debated

The mosque built by Malik Isan around 1520 is an important historical and architectural landmark. Malik Isan, also known as Isan Sultani and entitled Nizam-ul-Mulk, was a prominent noble in the court of Mahmud Begada, the Sultan of Gujarat. He is credited with founding the Isanpur suburb of Ahmedabad, a region that later grew in significance. The mosque, constructed in the early 16th century, is part of a larger complex that is set on a raised platform. This platform can be accessed via porches located on the north and east sides, offering a grand entrance. The mosque?s courtyard is square-shaped, with the mosque itself positioned on the west side. Architecturally, the mosque is divided into three sections on its fa?ade, each of which is topped with equally sized domes. Notably, the central dome is elevated higher than the two domes on either side, giving the structure a distinctive and symmetrical appearance. Directly opposite the mosque lies the tomb of Malik Isan, adding to the historical significance of the complex. Over the centuries, the mosque has faced challenges, including significant damage during the 2001 Gujarat earthquake, which weakened parts of its structure. Additionally, it was further desecrated during the 2002 Gujarat violence, adding to its deterioration. The structure continues to be at risk today due to encroachments around the area, which threaten its preservation and integrity. Despite these challenges, the mosque remains a testament to the rich architectural and cultural heritage of Gujarat from the early Mughal era.
