The Shah Khub Saiyed ki Masjid, also known as Farhat-ul-Mulk ki Masjid, is a historical mosque located near Teen Darwaja in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
The Shah Khub Sayyid Mosque, located at the heart of Ahmedabad?s historic walled city, stands south of the bustling market square near the Bhadra or Citadel. This architectural gem dates back to 1538 CE (945 AH) and was commissioned by Naw Khan Farhat al-Mulk, a prominent noble at the court of the Gujarat Sultans, as recorded in an inscription on the mosque. The mosque?s design reflects the refined artistry and architectural sensibilities of the period, embodying both functional and aesthetic elements that have stood the test of time. The mosque?s structure is rectangular, enclosed on three sides, while its eastern fa?ade opens entirely onto a spacious courtyard that connects directly to the prayer hall. This open fa?ade is flanked by two intricately carved minarets, which serve as both architectural and symbolic focal points. The minarets, massive and wide at their bases, resemble buttresses and taper upward to become slender cylindrical towers that soar above the roofline. Their exquisite carvings showcase the artisanship characteristic of Gujarat?s Sultanate period. Inside, the mosque features a large, pillared prayer hall, where eighteen intricately carved stone columns are arranged in three rows of six. These columns divide the interior space into three aisles running parallel to the qibla wall. Each aisle is composed of seven bays, creating a total of 21 bays. Each bay is capped by a small dome, lending a sense of rhythm and verticality to the prayer hall. The qibla wall, which indicates the direction of prayer, is marked by three mihrabs, elegantly carved niches that guide worshippers. Additionally, the qibla wall is pierced by four windows that allow natural light to filter into the prayer space. The mosque?s side walls are equally remarkable, featuring two balcony windows on each side. These windows, adorned with finely carved screens, provide views of the surrounding area while maintaining privacy and a sense of seclusion within the prayer hall. The harmonious interplay of light, space, and ornamentation within the Shah Khub Sayyid Mosque reflects the ingenuity of its designers and the cultural richness of its era, making it a significant landmark in Ahmedabad?s architectural heritage.
