Malik Alam's Mosque, also referred to as Peer Kamaal's Mosque, is a historically significant medieval structure located in the Shah Alam area of Ahmedabad, India.
Malik Alam's Mosque, an architectural masterpiece, was constructed in 1422 by Malik Alam bin Kabir, one of Sultan Ahmed Shah I's sons-in-law, who held the title of Vazir-ul-Mamalik. The mosque is a significant example of the fusion of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles, particularly evident in the intricate ornamentation of its Islamic minarets, which incorporate design elements reminiscent of Hindu spires. This blending of styles marks an evolution in architectural craftsmanship in Ahmedabad, showcasing a refined ability to harmonize diverse cultural influences. As described by James Burgess in 1900 in the Archaeological Survey of Western India, the mosque features five domes and a roof supported by 72 intricately carved pillars, complemented by 44 pilasters. Its interior spans 112 feet 7 inches by 31 feet 8 inches, with walls of varying thickness?3 feet 3 inches on the sides and back, and 5 feet 11 inches at the front. The central dome rises higher than the others, providing a focal point of grandeur. The fa?ade includes a single large pointed arch flanked by minarets, while the back wall houses five marble mihrabs, including a central one aligned with the great arch and two on each end facing the open colonnades. Despite its majestic design, the minarets suffered significant damage during the 1819 Rann of Kutch earthquake. Further instability led to the removal of their upper portions and a small canopy on four pillars by the Public Works Department in 1882 to prevent further collapse. Today, the mosque faces threats from encroachment and illegal construction, which jeopardize its preservation and historical significance. These challenges underscore the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect this remarkable monument that embodies the cultural and architectural legacy of its time.
